A centralized AI model repository is crucial for consistency, security, and accessibility across the organization. Evaluating the value of AI models before development helps optimize resource allocation, while reusing existing models minimizes duplication. Overall, AI governance supports risk management, compliance, and trust, guiding the organization in the responsible development and deployment of AI solutions.
AI Risks
AI encompasses a field in computer science focused on building systems capable of tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and generative AI. While ML and DL excel in classification, prediction, and decision-making, generative AI creates new data similar to its training data, such as images, text, and music. Generative AI offers exciting possibilities, including applications in drug discovery, but it also brings ethical and societal concerns. Issues like synthetic data generation raise questions about privacy, authenticity, and societal impact, highlighting the need for responsible AI use.

In Saudi Arabia, the Data and AI Authority (SDAIA) is developing comprehensive strategies to ensure the ethical and safe use of AI. Both the AI Act and SDAIA categorize AI risks into multiple levels to address various threats and ethical concerns. These efforts aim to regulate AI deployment and safeguard against potential risks.
Risk level should be determined for all AI use-cases, classifying them as high, limited or minimal. It is important to understand that AI systems with unacceptable risk level are prohibited. By addressing AI risks, implementing appropriate mitigation strategies we can harness the transformative potential of AI while ensuring that it is used in a responsible and beneficial manner. Risk management should be integrated directly into AI initiatives, ensuring concurrent oversight with AI development. This management covers various risk types, including data, algorithmic, compliance, operational, legal, reputational, and regulatory risks. Subcomponents like model interpretability, bias detection, and performance monitoring should be embedded to ensure continuous oversight throughout the AI system lifecycle, from design and development to post-deployment.
Responsible AI (RAI)
Integrating AI into business processes requires a thorough understanding of its operations and motivations to ensure accuracy, fairness, and privacy. Effective governance and monitoring mechanisms must be established to support innovation without hindering progress. While organizations globally recognize the need for Responsible AI (RAI), their progress varies. RAI aims to mitigate risks by ensuring AI systems are ethical, transparent, and aligned with societal values throughout their lifecycle. The importance of embedding RAI principles into AI development, deployment, and maintenance is crucial for responsible AI usage.
Accountability
Accountability in AI involves clearly defining roles and responsibilities for actions, outcomes, and organizational impact. During design, documentation is essential for auditing and risk mitigation, and stakeholders must be held accountable for the ethical responsibility and liability of AI system outcomes. In development, ownership and communication of responsibilities ensure sound oversight and integration of human judgment, while stakeholder approval is necessary before deployment. During deployment, roles and liabilities should be clearly defined, and the model’s performance must be monitored with periodic reports. Predefined triggers and alerts help mitigate risks and ensure ongoing human oversight
Transparency & Explainability
Transparency in AI involves clearly disclosing how AI systems operate and make decisions, ensuring stakeholders understand the system’s capabilities and limitations. Explainability refers to the ability to explain AI decisions in an understandable way. During design, stakeholders should be informed about how AI outcomes are processed, and an overview of the AI model’s decisions should be included. In development, transparent and explainable algorithms must be used, with third-party AI systems requiring ethics due diligence and accessible documentation. During deployment, performance metrics, accuracy, and impact should be documented and made available to stakeholders.
Fairness
Fairness in AI ensures unbiased, equitable decision-making for all individuals, regardless of factors like race, gender, or socioeconomic status. It involves identifying and mitigating biases in data and algorithms to prevent discrimination. During design, fairness-aware strategies should be adopted to identify potential harm and vulnerable groups, while a fairness assessment and appropriate metrics should be conducted. In development, fairness metrics must be considered when selecting the champion model, with justification required if the model fails. During deployment, fairness metrics should be continuously monitored, and any deviations beyond acceptable thresholds must be investigated for potential model adjustments.
Human-centricity
AI systems should be designed with users’ needs, preferences, and values in mind, ensuring human oversight, especially in critical decision-making. During design, the appropriate level of human involvement should be determined, with three approaches: Human in the Loop (HITL), Human on the Loop (HOTL), and Human out of the Loop (HOOTL). In development, the AI model should account for human oversight, and if using HOOTL, justification and the option for human intervention should be included. During deployment, human intervention should remain possible even in HOOTL systems. Oversight personnel must have the necessary expertise or be trained to manage AI implications effectively.
Privacy & Security
Security and privacy are critical in AI systems, ensuring protection against unauthorized access, malicious intent, and safeguarding user data. Privacy concerns align with the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) to prevent misuse of personal information. During design, AI systems should prioritize privacy and follow security best practices to protect data and algorithms. In development, the AI system must uphold security and integrity, with measures to protect data privacy and prevent unauthorized changes. After deployment, continuous monitoring is necessary to ensure the system remains secure and privacy-preserving, with AI system owners responsible for safeguarding personal information throughout its lifecycle.
Robustness & Safety
Robustness refers to an AI system’s ability to function under unexpected conditions, while safety ensures it operates without causing harm to humans, property, or the environment. During design, AI systems should be built to handle uncertainty and varied inputs, with documentation standards to track performance and address risks. In development, the system should be tested under extreme conditions using diverse and accurate training data to ensure robustness. After deployment, continuous monitoring is essential to assess risks, ensure safety, and prevent the system from being exploited to harm individuals or entities.
By following these practices and striving for continuous improvement, an AI system can effectively uphold RAI principles, ensuring responsible and ethical operation while minimizing potential risks. RAI maturity differs across AI systems, with some having more significant limitations on certain principles than others. It is crucial to incorporate all RAI principles from the outset of AI system implementation. Furthermore, regularly reviewing and enhancing these principles throughout the AI lifecycle is vital. The higher the risk associated with an AI system, the more crucial it becomes to adhere to RAI principles. Figure 3 illustrates the RAI levels, which indicate the ethical standards of AI systems.
Responsible AI assessment
RAI principles should be considered before and during the development, evaluation, and deployment of AI systems to ensure ethical, fair, and safe outcomes. Prior to deployment, a Responsible AI (RAI) assessment must be conducted to evaluate the risks and ethics of the AI model that may include two main criteria: the risk score and ethical score. The risk score evaluates potential risks based on severity, likelihood, and impact, while the ethical score assesses alignment with RAI principles using 26 questions. Combining both scores provides valuable insights and recommendations for informed decision-making regarding AI solutions.
